Best Amazon Deals for Desi Kitchen Essentials
The cookware, utensils, and specialty tools that South Asian home cooks actually use — and where Amazon pricing makes sense.
A South Asian kitchen has specific tool requirements that general cookware guides often miss. Pressure cookers, tava griddles, kadai woks, and the right spice storage are not optional — they are fundamental to the cooking methods involved. Here is what to buy on Amazon and what to look for.
The Pressure Cooker
Dal, beans, and many braised dishes are made in a stovetop pressure cooker in most South Asian households. Amazon carries Indian brands (Hawkins, Prestige) that are the standard in India and are available for import. These are designed for the specific pressure levels and cooking times that South Asian recipes call for.
If you prefer an electric pressure cooker, the Instant Pot works well for dal and rice but requires recipe adaptation — the cooking times used for stovetop pressure cooking do not transfer directly. Look for Instant Pot models with a "rice" function for basmati.
The Tava (Flat Griddle)
A cast iron or heavy-gauge carbon steel tava is essential for roti, chapati, paratha, and dosa. The flat or slightly concave surface distributes heat differently than a standard pan. Cast iron tava from Amazon brands like Lodge or imported Indian cast iron works well; avoid thin non-stick versions that warp under the high heat required.
The Kadai
A kadai — the wide, deep wok used for frying and stir-frying — is the primary vessel for many Indian curry and dry dish preparations. Carbon steel or cast iron versions season over time and develop a non-stick surface. Amazon carries both Indian-imported versions and US-made equivalents. The key spec is depth: a kadai should have high, angled sides that allow tossing without spillage.
Spice Storage and the Masala Dabba
A masala dabba — the round stainless steel spice container with seven individual wells and a tight-fitting lid — is the organizing system for everyday spices. Amazon sells several versions in both traditional round format and rectangular grid formats. Stainless steel is preferable to plastic for this; spices retain their flavor better and the containers do not absorb colors or smells.
The Chakla and Belan (Rolling Board and Pin)
For roti making, a smooth marble chakla (rolling board) and a thin, even rolling pin are important tools. Marble stays cool and does not absorb flour, which prevents sticking. Amazon sells marble chakla sets that include both pieces; look for boards at least 10 inches in diameter for comfortable roti rolling.
Where Amazon Pricing Makes Sense
Everyday stainless steel — plates, bowls, tumblers, containers — is well priced on Amazon and the quality is consistent. For specialty items like genuine Indian cast iron or imported brands, compare to specialty South Asian grocery stores in your area; Amazon's prices are competitive but shipping sometimes adds cost for heavy items. For lightweight items (spice containers, chakla-belan sets, small utensils), Amazon is generally the best combination of price and convenience.
